Therapy for Grief

What is Grief?

Grief is more than sadness after a loss. It is a natural response to losing someone, something, or a version of life that held meaning, connection, or significance.

While grief is often associated with death, it can also arise from the end of a relationship, a life transition, changes in health, loss of identity, unmet expectations, or any experience that alters the life you once knew. Grief can affect the way you think, feel, relate to others, and engage with the world around you. Because every loss is unique, grief can look and feel different for each person.

Grief Symptoms

  • Sadness, longing, or yearning.

  • Difficulty accepting or adjusting to the loss.

  • Emotional overwhelm or numbness.

  • Feelings of loneliness or isolation.

  • Changes in sleep or appetite.

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions.

  • Anger, guilt, regret, or resentment.

  • Fatigue, low energy, or lack of motivation.

At its core, grief is often the experience of learning to carry a loss while continuing to move forward in life. It is a process of adapting to change, honoring what was meaningful, and finding a way to integrate the loss into your life and story.

In many ways, grief is like learning to carry the absence of someone or something that once held deep meaning in your life. Some days the loss may feel heavy and ever-present, while other days it may quietly emerge through memories, emotions, or unexpected reminders. Grief can bring waves of sadness, longing, anger, confusion, or even moments of joy and gratitude, often when you least expect them. At its core, grief is often the mind and body's way of adapting to loss—working to make sense of a changed reality while honoring the connection, relationship, or life that once was.

Grief Treatment Approaches

My approach to supporting grief and loss is holistic, collaborative, and tailored to each individual's unique experience. I integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), EMDR, Polyvagal Theory, Attachment Theory, and Somatic Therapy to help clients navigate the emotional, relational, and nervous system impacts of loss. Together, we explore the thoughts, emotions, body sensations, memories, and attachment experiences that may arise throughout the grieving process while building greater self-awareness, emotional regulation, and resilience. Whether your loss is related to the death of a loved one or a significant life change, the goal is not simply to lessen the pain of grief, but to help you honor your loss, reconnect with yourself, and find meaning, healing, and connection as you move forward.
